When talking to my
conservative peers, it’s better to phrase it as “it’s more cost effective to
house the homeless in permanent apartments than it is to cart them to and from
hospitals and jails for minor offenses like loitering.” This is fiscally true.
It’s also more compassionate. So wouldn’t it follow that self-described fiscal
conservatives who identify as Christian would embrace these policies? I’ve had
this debate several times.Conservative peers tell me that it’s more about
responsibility and that if you give people a handout, then they’ll never work
their way up. I hear that, but there’s no empirical evidence demonstrating that
it’s best or better to keep homeless individuals on the street. In fact, there
are multiple studies demonstrating the opposite. Also I’m the product of
handouts: private school, no student loans, cars given to me, etc.
